In 1880, Ethna Hoxie and her sister Emma lived with their father Simon Hoxie (b. abt. 1851) and mother Lydia A. Hoxie (b. abt. 1855), in Westerly, Rhode Island. Simon died shortly after, in 1881, and by 1885 the sisters were split up between two different households, with mother Lydia nowhere to be found. Ethna ended up in the family of Charles S. Coon and Cora (Sisson) Coon, where she was listed as a “niece” on the census. Research into the families of both Charles S. Coon and Cora Sisson offer promising leads for Lydia’s birth name that are ultimately disproven or unresolved without further evidence.
